Missionary Calling | Orthodox Answers
Dalia Fam is an American born Christian that decided to move to Zambia around 13 years ago. Her move to this small country in the south of Africa derived from her urge and calling to serve and help the most vulnerable. Dalia describes that from a young age, she felt a persistent desire to be a missionary – a voice who have no voice.
However, she struggled to understand how to fuel and substantiate this calling in her life. Dalia expresses her inspiration from a verse in Song of Songs which reads, “I am my beloved’s, And my beloved is mine. He feeds his flock among the lilies” (Song of Songs 6:3).
Once Dalia understood that she belonged to someone greater than her, she stopped looking at herself. Instead, she sought to find God by doing His work – to shepherd His sheep through her missionary.
Dalia also shares this quote from St Augustine: “To fall in love with God is the greatest romance; to seek him the greatest adventure; to find him, the greatest human achievement.”
It was when Dalia fell in love with God that she was willing to follow Him to the ends of the earth. However, this takes a lot of courage and one must readily accept God’s call for their lives.
“A missionary is someone who is not afraid to show the world who they are… they are the light that the world needs.”
