What does it actually mean to follow Christ? Not in theory, not as a doctrinal position, but as a lived, daily reality? Discipleship by Pope Shenouda III, the 117th Pope of Alexandria and one of the most influential Coptic Orthodox teachers of the twentieth century, answers this question with rare depth and practicality. First delivered as lectures for the formation of Christian servants in 1972, this book has shaped generations of Coptic Orthodox Christians and continues to speak with clarity to anyone serious about growing in the spiritual life.

Pope Shenouda opens by establishing a foundational truth: discipleship is not a course you complete or a stage you pass through. It is a way of life. To be a disciple of Christ means to abide in his teaching so completely that it becomes visible in how you live, how you love, and how you carry yourself in the world. The mark of a disciple, as Christ himself said, is not correct doctrine alone but the love that others can actually see: "By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another" (John 13:35).

Who this book is for

Discipleship was originally written for the formation of servants and Christian ministers. But its reach is wider than that. It is for anyone in the Coptic Orthodox tradition seeking a deeper understanding of the spiritual life, for church servants and youth leaders looking for a practical foundation to their ministry, for those exploring Eastern Christianity and the Coptic tradition, and for anyone drawn to the wisdom of the Desert Fathers and the early Church. Non-Coptic readers will find the content richly accessible: Pope Shenouda writes as a pastor speaking directly to his reader, not as an academic addressing a specialist audience.

About the author

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III served as the 117th Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of the See of Saint Mark from 1971 until his death in 2012. A theologian, poet, and monastic who spent six years as a hermit before his consecration as bishop, he authored more than one hundred books on doctrine, spirituality, prayer, and Christian living. Discipleship belongs to his Ministry Series, alongside The Holy Zeal and The Spirituality of Ministry.

Frequently asked questions

What topics does Discipleship by Pope Shenouda III cover?

The book covers the conditions of true discipleship, learning from the Desert Fathers, discipleship through the lives of others, lessons drawn from nature and the animal world, formation through the Church's liturgical rites, learning from historical and personal events, and the role of the father confessor in spiritual direction.

Is this book suitable for non-Coptic readers?

Yes. While rooted in the Coptic Orthodox tradition, the book draws primarily from Holy Scripture and the Desert Fathers, whose wisdom is foundational across all branches of Christianity. Anyone interested in Christian discipleship, spiritual formation, or Eastern Christian spirituality will find it accessible and enriching.

What makes Pope Shenouda's approach to discipleship distinctive?

Pope Shenouda insists that discipleship is about life, not just knowledge. He draws lessons from an unusually wide range of sources, including Scripture, the Fathers, nature, the liturgy, and daily events, and consistently brings the reader back to the question of how teaching becomes visible in how a person actually lives.

What is the role of the father confessor in this book?

The final chapter argues that a good spiritual father or confessor is one of the most important resources available for Christian formation. Pope Shenouda explains what to look for in a director, how to receive guidance well, and the spiritual dangers of rejecting human teachers in favor of claimed direct guidance from God.

Is Discipleship part of a series?

Yes. It is part of Pope Shenouda's Ministry Series, originally designed as a curriculum for the formation of church servants. The series also includes The Holy Zeal and The Spirituality of Ministry.
