Genesis For Teens
The book of Genesis is the first book of the Bible, and opens with one of the most famous first sentences of any literary work: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). This verse sets the scene for the story of creation, and by extension, the entire book of Genesis as a whole. Now the book of Genesis as a whole is a book of beginnings- “Genesis” itself means “beginning” in both Hebrew and Greek!
In this book, we encounter a broken humanity- riddled by love, hatred, greed, jealousy, violence, and sexual sin. But despite this, we are provided with a unique insight into the nature of God as both a Creator and Redeemer. Genesis teaches us about the problem of sin and God’s plan for salvation. It reveals the character of God and his relentless pursuit to restore the broken fellowship between Himself and humanity.
Filled with key characters including Adam and Eve, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and Noah amongst many others, this book is riddled with plots and sub-plots that recount God’s relationship with humanity. It begins with the affirmation that God created the universe and ends with a promise that God will continue to show concern for his people, providing a message of hope to all mankind.
This book serves as an Orthodox study guide for the book of Genesis. Join us, as we go through Genesis character by character and story by story. We’ll meet people who are just like us; some who are close to God and do their utmost to please Him, and others who feel disappointed, betrayed, and helpless in their pursuit of God. There’s a lesson to be learned from every chapter, every character, and every narrative.
