The Conferences

The Conferences of St John Cassian is a classic of Christian spiritual wisdom, written for monks and of great benefit to everyday lay readers too.

St John lived in the fourth century and became a monk. He heard much about the monks and monasteries of Egypt and longed to go there and talk with the elders. In the end he travelled to Egypt with his fellow monk Germanus and spent many years living in its monasteries.

This book, like his Institutes, grew out of those years, and especially out of his conversations with the elder monks he met. It includes St John's questions to the elders and their answers.

If you have ever wished to sit with an elder monk, a blessed man close to God who has learnt how to fight his thoughts and overcome the tricks of the devil, this book lets you do just that.
